Interactive English⁄Spanish Workshops
Interactive workshops co-developed by Yasmin Wurts Metivier of Panoltia and Eta Trabing of the Berkana Language Center will be offered in September and October for bilingual (English/Spanish) people who provide interpreter services or who wish to provide interpreter services in health and human services and other community settings.
Participants must be able to read, write, and speak English and Spanish fluently. The cost is $199 per person. Each participant will receive a copy of the NEW edition of "Manual For Community Interpreters" published by Berkana Language Center and Panolita, Inc. (a $60 retail value). The workshop will be offered at Level 1 (2 days) and Level 2 (1 day). The dates and locations are:
Level 1: September 25 and 26, Charlotte, NC.
Level 2: October 2, Durham, NC.

Jackie Metivier featured on North Carolina Public Radio
"Speaking in the first person when that first person isn't you"
Jackie Metivier, past-President of CATI and President of Bilingual Communications, Inc. of Cary, NC, was featured on the North Carolina Public Radio show "The Story" on September 12. She was interviewed by host Dick Gordon about how tough it is to be an interpreter, and her theme was "Speaking in the first person when that first person isn't you."

Yasmin Wurts Metivier appointed to Hispanic/Latino Affairs Council
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley has appointed Yasmin Wurts Metivier of Apex to the Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
Metivier is the president of Panoltia, Inc. She is the advisor to the Institute of Mexicans Abroad and is the host of Open-Net, an English-Spanish website.
She is a member of the N.C. Society of Hispanic Professionals. Metivier was awarded the Latino Diamante Award for Business in 2002 and was featured in "Women Extraordinaire in N.C." by Business Leader Magazine in 2002. She received her Bachelors degree in business and her Masters degree in marketing from ISEC University in Mexico City.
The council advises the governor on issues relating to the Hispanic/Latino community in North Carolina, supports state efforts toward the improvement of race and ethnic relations and provides a forum for discussion of issues concerning the Hispanic/Latino community. The advisory council has 28 members serving at the pleasure of the governor. The governor appoints 15 members. The secretary of the Department of Administration, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, the secretary of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, the secretary of Revenue, the commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles, the chairman of the Employment Security Commission, the commissioner of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the commissioner of Labor, the superintendent of Public Instruction, the Honorary Consul of Mexico, the secretary of Commerce, a member of the governor's legal counsel and the attorney general also serve on the board.
