CATI Conversation Topic: Self-Care Tips for Interpreters and Translators. We invite you to also bring you own ideas, strategies and techniques to take care of yourself when interpreting or translating and share them with us!

12 Bones Smokehouse is providing us with a private space behind the bar! Feel free to grab a drink and then meet us there. We will socialize for a bit before the CATI Conversations session, and then we can hang out at the patio and the rest of the brewery. A Food Truck Style limited menu will be available consisting of ribs, sandwiches and select specials.

Name: Gulnara Akbarova

Speaker Bio: Gulnara Akbarova was born in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, which is one of post-Soviet republics located near Turkey, Iran and Russia. She was growing up bilingual in Russian and Azerbaijani. Gulnara graduated from the University of Foreign Languages in Azerbaijan and started working at the Turan news agency as an interpreter and translator in 1993. She was working with this Agency till 2016. During this period she also worked as a freelance translator with various magazines and organizations. While working at the agency, Gulnara took multiple journalism trainings in Baku and London and started working as a foreign reporter and also wrote some investigative journalism pieces.

In 2009 her family moved to Dili, Timor Leste, where she worked as a teacher at the International School till 2011.

Her career as a medical interpreter started in 2014 in US after she took Medical Interpreter trainings and started working as a freelance onsite medical interpreter.

From 2016 to 2018 Gulnara worked as an administrator at Western Carolina Interpreter Network (WIN). She attended Cross Cultural Communications (CCC) Training of Trainers in June 2017 and conducted her first medical interpreter training in January 2018 at local MAHEC.

Gulnara joined Stratus Video company in April 2018 as a video remote interpreter and currently she does onsite, video and over-the-phone interpreting and medical interpreter trainings. Gulnara is a Board Director of the National Board for Certification of Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) since March 2019.

Speaker Bio: Cynthia is a professional translator from Argentina who has been providing language services since 2011. She holds a B.A. in English-Spanish Technical, Scientific and Literary Translation and a M.A. in Art and Communication. Besides having extensive experience in translation, editing and localization, she is a certified Spanish Proofreader and Teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language. After advancing her career as a Senior Translation Project Manager in a large company in the Chicago metropolitan area, she decided to open her own translation agency, Argentum Translations, with her twin sister to help businesses overcome language and cultural barriers, expand into new markets, connect with the entire non-English speaking community and set themselves apart from their competition.
