Informed Consent: A Matter of Life and Death

In a study carried out by the University of California at Berkeley, 35 medical malpractice claims caused by language access issues totaled $5M or $142,857 per case in damages, settlements and legal fees. Even more costly was the irreparable damage and loss of life incurred. Of these 35 cases, two children and three adults died.

What does the law say about informed consent? Why is it important to obtain IC in the patient’s first language? How can we as interpreters encourage IC compliance within our work environments? We’ll take an in depth look at these questions in addition to reviewing different types of consents and suggested operating procedures for interpreters when obtaining consent in clinical settings.

Catherine has a Master of Arts in Interpreting and Translation Studies from Wake Forest University. A Certified Healthcare Interpreter, she has two years of Spanish interpreting and translation experience from Wake Baptist Medical Center and UNC Hospitals. In her free time, she is currently taking a Linguistics Class at UNC and serving as CATI’s board secretary.

Parking will cost $1.50 per hour in the parking deck. Use the Sky Walk to cross Manning then follow signs to the Women’s Hospital. Look for the CATI signs to find the Conference Room.

Refreshments will be available and there is a Starbucks not far from the conference room.
