Title: Language & Culture: Interpreting American English Profanity
In this course, participants will gain an understanding of how profanity is used in US English and where it will come up in their work as court interpreters. They will learn about legal cases covering obscenity and profanity in the State and Federal Courts. They will learn about how and why profanity is used and work on finding solutions to interpret and translate profanity from English to their working languages.
Objectives:
- Understand the role and usage of profanity in U.S. English, particularly in legal and courtroom contexts.
- Analyze key legal cases related to obscenity and profanity in both State and Federal Courts.
- Develop strategies for accurately interpreting and translating profanity from English into participants’ working languages.
Bio:
Javier Castillo, president of Castillo Language Services, Inc. in Greenville, NC, brings 25 years of experience in interpretation, translation, forensic transcription-translation and training. He is a Federally Certified Court Interpreter, NC AOC certified interpreter, and Certified Medical Interpreter (CCHI). He has extensive experience interpreting human trafficking issues for federal cases and for the U.S. Department of State. He is the former chair of NAJIT and former president of CATI, he leads IAPTI’s U.S. Chapter. Since 2007, he has trained interpreters, translators and other professionals across the globe.
