Beyond Theory: Meeting CCHI’s New Interactive Ethics CE Requirement

by Johanna Parker

Saturday October 10th, 11AM ET

For interpreters certified by CCHI, 2027 is the dawn of a new era!

In line with CCHI’s commitment to raising the bar on healthcare interpreter quality standards, starting in 2027, CCHI-certified interpreters will need to complete 2 hours of interactive continuing education in healthcare interpreting ethics. It’s a small addition on paper, but it reflects CCHI’s recognition that ethical competence, like interpreting skill itself, requires continuous practice rather than one-time instruction. This is an opportunity to sharpen professional judgment and reinforce interpreters’ standing as accountable members of the healthcare team.

This session prepares interpreters to meet the requirement. Presented by CCHI Chair and member of the Continuing Education Committee, Johanna Parker, participants will unpack the rationale behind the new standard, gain understanding of interactive training versus passive coursework and tips for discerning which types of workshops and classes will help certified interpreters meet the requirement. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the new requirement, hands-on experience with the kind of interactive ethics training that satisfies it, and a decision-making framework they can apply immediately in determining what types of training to engage in.

With the requirement taking effect January 1, 2027, this session gives interpreters both the what (a clear breakdown of the requirement) and the how (a working model of the interactive format CCHI now mandates) — positioning them to renew with confidence!

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Explain CCHI’s new interactive Ethics CE requirement, including its scope, timeline, and place within the broader 32-hour renewal cycle
  • Identify what distinguishes “interactive” CE from traditional coursework.
  • Apply a decision-making framework to evaluate CE offerings and select training that satisfies the interactive ethics requirement.
